In a recent report, families shared profound changes after eliminating artificial dyes from their diets. Whitney and Brandon Cawood’s son, for example, experienced a dramatic reduction in aggressive behavior after they removed synthetic dyes from his meals. When he accidentally consumed foods with dyes, his previous behavioral issues quickly resurfaced, reinforcing the connection.
The Research: A Closer Look
A meta-analysis highlighted that 16 25 studies found a positive association between artificial dyes and behavioral issues. Animal studies further confirm that these dyes can alter brain activity, memory, and neurotransmitter function. The California Environmental Protection Agency’s landmark report supports these findings, showing a link between dyes and hyperactivity, irritability, and inattention in children.
Despite mounting evidence, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still allows the widespread use of nine synthetic food dyes in everyday products.
Why Are Dyes Still in Our Foods?
Artificial food dyes are primarily used for visual appeal—they don’t improve taste, preserve food, or provide nutritional benefits. While countries like the European Union mandate warning labels on products with synthetic dyes, many U.S. companies continue to use them in domestic versions of their products.
This discrepancy means a cereal box in Europe may be free from synthetic dyes while the same product in the U.S. is loaded with them.
Artificial dyes can be found in more than brightly colored candies and drinks. They hide in:
Medications, including painkillers and allergy syrups.
Everyday foods like pickles, ice cream, and white cheese.
Non-food items such as markers, temporary tattoos, and bath products.
Actionable Steps for Concerned Families
If you suspect synthetic dyes may be affecting your family, here’s how to start addressing the issue:
Eliminate Artificial Dyes: Read ingredient labels carefully. Avoid common dyes, such as Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1. Look for natural alternatives like beet juice or turmeric.
Focus on Whole Foods: Opt for minimally processed foods. Fruits, vegetables, and naturally prepared meals are free from synthetic additives.
Switch Brands: Many companies now offer dye-free versions of popular snacks, candies, and drinks. Online communities can recommend trusted brands.
Involve Your Children: Studies show that children are more likely to accept new foods if they help prepare or grow them.
Consult a Professional: Before making significant dietary changes, consult a healthcare provider, especially if your child has medical conditions or takes medications containing dyes.
The Bigger Picture
Removing artificial food dyes is a small but impactful step toward reducing toxic exposures in your family’s life. Pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene notes that while sugar remains a significant concern, synthetic dyes are a controllable factor that can lead to a noticeable shift in a child’s behavior and school performance.
